Dairy farming has a huge potential for growth in Kenya. Purko trust has been exploring avenues to enhance its dairy productivity through engagements with friends and partners. Dairy farming is an industry that has successfully triggered the adoption of new technology in the way farming is done and that is the way we want to go.

Dairy Farming has so far proved to be a regular and low cost income earner, from the 14 lactating cows currently at the farm, an average of Ksh. 9,500 is earned per cow per month, giving a total of Ksh. 95,000 to Ksh. 100,000 per year per cow, assuming that every cow lactates for 10 months.  By increasing the number of lactating dairy cows in the farm, the trust has a chance of increasing its daily revenue base at a low operations cost.

We propose that we increase the number of Dairy cattle by 100. The trust has already sought a Supplier Number from the New Kenya cooperative Creameries (New KCC), to supply milk at  buying price of Ksh. 30 per litre. The total cost for this herd of in-calf heifers is Ksh. 10 Million. In one year, the 100 lactating heifers can give an annual milk sales average of Ksh. 10 Million annually, repaying back its cost of purchase in a record one year.

Purko Trust supported and participated the conference whose main objective was to foster reconciliation and unity amongst the Maa Community. This conference brought together all the Maa speaking communities from around Kenya and Tanzania led by the Anglican Church Archbishop His Grace Jackson Ole Sapit.

Prayer and Repentance

For the first time in the history of the Maasai community leaders from all walks of life and a representation of the general community assembled at William Ole Ntimama Stadium in Narok town to pray and burry the differences between them.

A repentance mass was also held at the stadium asking God to forgive the community from the past atrocities committed by the community. Purko Trust is proud to have been associated as a partner in the historic event.

There is a growing global interest in Special Economic Zones (SEZs) as alternative means to turnaround the economies and unlock the potential of agriculture. With most African countries at various levels of socio-economic fragility, the SEZs route offers some options to transform agriculture and develop agribusiness markets that are essential in ensuring food and nutrition security, ending hunger and reduce poverty. Purko Development Trust is taking the lead in collaboration with the Ministry of Devolution and ASAL, ENSDA and several other government agencies to ensure the establishment of this economic block is realized.

There is a need for communities to get involved in pushing the government’s Big Four Agenda, Principal Secretary State Department for Devolution Charles Sunkuli has said. Speaking in Nakuru on Tuesday during the closure of a two-day workshop on Special Economic Zones in the Mau Region, Sunkuli said communities have the potential to assist the government to achieve its development agenda. While commending the leadership of PURKO Development Trust for contributing towards food security in Narok County, the PS said the Ministry of Devolution will continue to support such community projects.
